Search for singers...
14th February 2008

KEEN singers are being urged to warm up their vocal chords to help a Worle group hit the right notes.
St Martin’s choir is on the lookout for tuneful new members.
There has been an Anglican church on the hill in Worle since 1125 and, for much of that time, it has had a choir.
The stalls the group sing in came from Woodspring Priory about 600 years ago so there is a little bit of history included in every practice session.
The choir has been an important part of the life of the church in Worle, supporting the worship and also providing entertainment in the form of concerts or by supporting other events. The group aims to have an enjoyable time, whether worshipping, singing or socialising.
Many of the younger members of the choir have moved away in their higher education and there is a need for singers of similar ages to replace them.
Membership has dwindled from about 30 down to a core of just 13 and there is a particular shortage of male singers.
There is a degree of commitment required with attendance at practice each week and at the morning and evening services each Sunday. Occasionally the choir is asked to sing at wedding services and, while all of the work is undertaken on a voluntary basis, the junior members do receive a token payment from fees earned.
The senior members accumulate their fees to finance the purchase of new robes and for music and social gatherings, with occasional contributions made to the church and other charities.
The choir is on the look-out for singers of all ages and abilities and hopes to continue providing entertainment for Worle parishioners for years to come.
