Everyone is welcome

10th January 2007

WHETHER it’s plastic bags, animal habitats or the use of fossil fuels, TENONS can help you find out more about the subject you are most interested in.
TENONS is known as an umbrella organisation, which aims to provide people with information about differing environmental issues.
It also provides a platform for those who want to educate others about a topic they think is important.
Chairman Rosemary Dowie said: “Our open meetings mean that anyone is welcome to come along to learn more about ways of protecting the environment, or to put their own views forward.
“If members of our group do not have the right information for someone’s interest, we will be able to point them in the direction of someone who does.”
Projects supported by TENONS include Winscombe Zero Waste, which aims to make the village plastic bag free by providing reusable bags for residents to take shopping.
Another is Transition Village Wrington, which is encouraging residents to become more self-sufficient rather than relying on the use of fossil fuels.
Cutting down waste, saving energy, saving water, using transport wisely and gardening to benefit wildlife are also promoted by the group.
Mrs Dowie said: “We encourage the use of sustainable methods to protect our climate so that future generations will benefit.
“We would like to attract more young people to our meetings.
“If they have a certain interest they should let us know and we would be happy to help them find out more about it.
“We need to start work now if we want problems to be reduced for future generations.”
Meetings of the group normally include presentations from guests and those at the meeting on February 7 will hear from Dr Pat Cottingham about genetically modified foods.
