Worth the climb!

BRENT Knoll is a delightful village in Somerset, which has a wealth of history to discover.
It has one of the few hills on the picturesque Somerset levels and this can be seen from miles around. The distinctive hill of Brent Knoll stands 449 feet above sea level, giving beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. Glastonbury Tor, the Mendip Hills, Cheddar Gorge and the Quantock Hills can be seen, making the climb up the Knoll so worthwhile.
Brent Knoll’s history can be traced back 300 million years ago to jurassic times when dinosaurs and primitive mammals roamed the area. There are also indications of the Bronze age, Iron age and Romans.
In AD 1607 the whole of the Vale of Avalon flooded to a depth of 12 feet as far as Glastonbury. Then in 1703 the sea broke across the land again. Drainage efforts increased in the 18th and 19th centuries and made living in the village a more viable proposition. Many historical buildings still remain in Brent Knoll.
After enjoying this charming area you may decide to stay just a little longer. The village pubs offer a range of fine wines, real ales and tasty menus giving an excuse to linger and enjoy this hidden part of Somerset.
