A Grand day out

THE Grand Pier underwent a £450,000 facelift during the winter. A pristine white facade, two imposing towers and new lettering now greet visitors.
Many other improvements have been undertaken, making the pier a must-see attraction.
When the pier first opened in 1904, it was a very different place from what it is today.
The pavilion was home to an Edwardian theatre, which offered diverse entertainment such as opera, musical comedy, Shakespeare, ballet and even boxing. Many famous names appeared there, including Sir Ralph Richardson and Cicely Courtneidge.
The pavilion was destroyed by fire in January 1930. It was rebuilt and re-opened in 1933 but the theatre was replaced by a large funfair.
In 1970 the entrance area to the pier was redeveloped to provide shops and amusements.
It is one of the focal points of Weston where everyone from babies to senior citizens enjoys what the pier has to offer.
Whether it's a leisurely walk to enjoy the fresh air, enjoy the funfair and amusements or just to sit and watch the world go by, The Grand Pier has it all.
