Until August 9: THE PORTRAIT OF A LADY. Henry James's 19th century masterpiece is one of the wonders of world literature. Set in London, Rome and Florence, it tells the story of Isabel Archer, a beautiful, young American heiress, who travels to Europe on a voyage of self discovery. Isabel is accompanied by the delightful Madam Merle who seems to have many friends, but no past. Having turned down an English lord and wealthy American industrialist, Isabel marries Gilbert Osmond, a man of exquisite taste and sensibility, who claims to care nothing for worldly possessions. As Gilbert and Madam Merle reveal their true faces, Isabel has to confront her future alone. The all-star cast includes Catherine McCormack whose numerous major films include Braveheart, The Land Girls, Spy Game, The Moon and the Stars and 28 Weeks Later.
Until August 9: A DOLL'S HOUSE. In 1879, Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House stunned the world and provoked outrage. One critic compared it to the dropping of a bomb into contemporary life. The story is based on Nora who thought she had the perfect life until a ghost from the past returns. Forced to confront reality, she recognises that she is little more than Torvald, her husband's plaything, trapped by convention with a suffocating marriage. Her decision to slam the door on being a wife and mother and empower herself is one of the iconic moments of modern drama. The production stars Catherine McCormack and Finbar Lynch.
Until August 9: BORN IN THE GARDENS. This comedy by Peter Nichols was originally commissioned by Bristol Old Vic to celebrate its 200th anniversary in 1979. Maud and her son Mo live in a decaying mock-Tudor house in Bristol. She chats to people on the telly, he converses with the cat and both share a penchant for bizarre cocktails, tinned food and keeping the past alive. When older son, Hedley and Mo's twin, Queenie, return for their father's funeral, they try to persuade Maud and Mo that the time is ripe to escape the confines of their crumbling home, but not everyone wants freedom when it is offered.
August 12-30: ENJOY. Written in 1980, Alan Bennett set this dark comedy in his home town of Leeds where an ageing couple are living in the city's last back-to-back. With the demolition of the area in progress, Wilf and Connie are soon to be re-housed in a brand new maisonette with a waste disposal unit and non-slip vinyl flooring. When a sociologist comes to observe them in their daily life, normality takes a decidedly atypical turn. The cast of 15 stars Alison Steadman. |
