Celadon Griggs
23rd April 2008
A WELL-KNOWN Axbridge youth worker and East Brent resident has died.
Celadon Griggs, who was known as 'Griggy' to friends, died on April 16 in Weston General Hospital, aged 92.
The Weston and Axbridge youth organiser, Rossholme School bursar and radio playwright, was born in Kent before living in South Africa and returning to England aged eight.
It was only when he moved into Uphill Grange Nursing Home in 2004 his son Jeremy Griggs found notes about his childhood experiences and urged him to compile the book Celadon released in 2006.
Celadon released A South African Childhood in October 2006 and proudly posed for a picture for the Weston & Somerset Mercury with his son.
Griggy was also well-known in East Brent, not only for his work with the parish council, which he chaired for 15 years, but also as a church warden for St Mary's Church.
Celadon was also a regular sight in Brent Knoll and could be often spotted walking his dogs up to the summit until he was 80.
His funeral will be held on Tuesday at St Mary's Church in East Brent at 2pm. Anyone with enquiries about the arrangements should call 01278 782886.
CA Griggs was appointed Weston Youth Officer after active war service in Burma.
He knew every youth club and every youth worker, giving them all the help he could.
He supported Dennis Cole’s very successful Youth Orchestra and Weston’s annual youth exchange with Hildesheim.
Hundreds of proud Westonians owe their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award to Griggy who promoted the scheme from the start throughout the district, earning the first two Golds in Somerset. All that was infused with his special brand of ex-service humour and irreverent vigour, making it a pleasure as well as a privilege to work with him.
