Doris White

10th April 2008
A WOMAN who served as mayoress of Weston during the 1980s has died.
Doris White was born in Builth Wells and moved to Weston Hospital to train as a state registered nurse.
During this time she met George Allen White, a geography and geology teacher at Weston Grammar School.
They married in 1939 in Wales and set up home in Brendon Avenue, Weston.
Mr White was a major in the army and served abroad during the war. In 1951 the family moved to Norwich for 15 years before returning to Weston and settling in Springfield Avenue. The couple had two daughters, Nicola and Angela.
Mr White became mayor in 1983 and the popular couple enjoyed their mayoral year.
Mrs White fondly remembered being interviewed by Weston & Somerset Mercury reporter Jill Dando.
The couple enjoyed travelling and went abroad numerous times including to Hong Kong where Angela lived for some years before moving to Sussex.
Mrs White had varied interests and helped out at the Worthy Lane Day Centre in Weston for the elderly for many years and was also a member of the Women’s Fellowship at Victoria Methodist Church. She enjoyed reading, entertaining, concerts and supported local charities.
Her daughter, Nicola, said: “She had a very busy social life and was still friends with many nurses she trained with at Weston Hospital..”
Mrs White had three grandchildren and one great grandson.
