Gordon Ireland
9th January 2008
A DANGEROUS road has claimed the life of a 'much-loved' family man.
Gordon Ireland was killed as he was walking along the main road in Rooksbridge on Friday.
The A38 is infamous for road accidents with an average of 29 people killed or seriously injured there every year.
Mr Ireland was involved in a collision with a white BMW 5 series in broad daylight.
The 80-year-old was badly injured and taken to Weston General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Hi family this week released a statement saying: "Gordon was a much-loved husband, father and grandfather to Pat, John, Paul, Louise, Claire, Lucy, Lyn and Nels.
"He was tragically taken from us and will be desperately missed by all his family and friends."
The route along the A38 is infamous as a site for fatalities and serious injuries.
The Somerset Road Safety Partnership (SRSP) revealed last year that more than 720 injuries were recorded on the road in the space of five years.
Mr Ireland was knocked down at around 12.15pm on Friday.
Police are appealing for witnesses and are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the BMW or Mr Ireland in the period leading up to the collision.
Anyone with any information can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
Mr Ireland's funeral will be held at Weston Crematorium in Ebdon Road, Worle, on January 22 at 1pm.
