John Martyn, aged 51, of Dark Lane, was driving his Lotus Elan on the A371 when it crashed with a Peugeot 306, less than a mile from his family home.
Floral tributes now line the road where the accident happened.
His family said: "John was hardworking, enthusiastic and energetic. His sudden and untimely death has shocked us profoundly.
"He was a wonderful man who worked hard for the community and will be sadly missed by his family and friends."
Mr Martyn was a former serviceman, who joined up when he was 16 years old and left after 22 years with the Royal Engineers.
His active duty took him to Northern Ireland and the Falklands Isles, where he supervised the construction of a landing strip at Goose Green.
A successful army career saw him become the youngest person promoted to the rank of warrant officer.
After leaving the forces, John bought printing company SP Press in Cheddar that has helped Crimestoppers with its media campaigns.
His family added: "He was a generous man who gave his services freely to the village's carnival committee and the Royal British Legion.
"John was an active member of Wiltshire Crimestoppers, which has chosen to dedicate to him its annual fundraising event at Bowood House.
"The group also plans to give an award to a young person who has made a significant contribution to the community, in remembrance of John."
He leaves behind his wife, Anne and their two sons, Darren, aged 22, and 20-year-old Richard.
His eldest son is due to graduate from the Italia Conte Academy in London to begin a career in musical theatre and Richard will take up the reigns at his father's business in Cheddar.
