Carnival fun rolls into town
22nd November 2007

THOUSANDS of people braved the weather on Monday night to see Weston’s annual carnival.
Revellers had come from far and wide to see the glittering procession of 130 entries wind its way through the town centre.
Marching bands led the parade out of Locking Road Car Park where it followed a familiar route around Alexandra Parade.
However, the evening did not pass without incident as one of the performers had to be helped off the King William Tableau float at the corner of Alfred Street and the Boulevard at around 8.15pm.
Two members of St John Ambulance’s cycle response team attended the scene after the man, who was in his forties, had fainted.
He was taken to a nearby treatment centre in Oxford Street where he was later released suffering no ill effects.
Regional operations manager Jeremy Hughes said there were 10 incidents on the night which was ‘much lower than previous years where from 20 to 30 is usually the norm’.
One person was taken to Weston General Hospital suffering from a suspected fractured hand.

SOME ladies in a limo got together at this year’s carnival to remember a friend who could not be there with them.
Eleven women from the Weston Belles hopped in to the extremely long car and raised a glass to fellow member Margaret Tripp who died last week before she could take part.
Margaret, aged 62, had suffered from a long illness and her friends decided they would still take part in the carnival with their float, which she had organised in the hope she would be there with them.
Margaret, a former nurse and a mother-of two, lived in St Georges with her husband Mike. She wanted to collect for Macmillan Cancer Support on Monday night.
The Weston Belles is a branch of the Red Hat Society, which allows women to get together and ‘focus on fun, friendship frivolity and sisterhood’.
The Red Hatters were formed in 1998 in America and members meet up wearing the mandatory red hat and purple clothes for women over 50 and pink hats and lilac clothes for the rest. Margaret helped to set up the Weston branch.
