JILL
DANDO TRIAL - Friday, March 2
Legal arguments dominate first week of case
Jill jury set to be sworn in
The jury in the Jill Dando murder trial is expected to be sworn
in on Friday, March 2. The case opened on Monday in court number
one at the Old Bailey in London but so far only a series of legal
arguments has been heard.
Barry George, aged 40, of Fulham, West London, has denied murdering
the former Weston & Somerset Mercury reporter on the doorstep of
her home on April 26, 1999.
Jill's brother, Nigel, is expected to be present at the first day
of the trial itself on Monday. Her fiance, consultant gynaecologist
Alan Farthing, has been present during this week's legal wranglings.
Newspapers were this week finally granted permission to print photographs
of jobless George after the judge presiding over the case, Mr Justice
Gage, lifted a legal order banning them.
Jill, aged 37, died after being shot once in the head at close
range with a semi-automatic pistol as she stood outside her home
in Fulham. The home of the accused is a quarter of a mile from Jill's.
George, who denies murder, has changed his name to Bulsara by deed
poll. He was arrested and charged with Jill's murder last May.
Web editor's note: The Mercury
had gone to press by the time the decision to adjourn the case until
April 23 had been made.
However, this website was the first site published by a local
newspaper to carry the story of the adjournment.
