An Education - The Curzon

17 November 2009

FILM-GOERS will return to school life in the 1960s when An Education (12A) is shown in Clevedon this week.

The film transports audiences back to 1961 where 16-year-old Twickenham schoolgirl Jenny (Carey Mulligan) is poised on the brink of womanhood.

Stifled by adolescent routine, Jenny cannot wait for her adult life to begin. She is a diligent student excelling in all subjects except Latin - the one course her father is convinced will land her a place at Oxford University.

Then one rainy day her life is upended by the arrival of unsuitable suitor David (Peter Sarsgaard).

David introduces Jenny to a glittering new world of classical concerts and late-night suppers with his attractive friend and business partner Danny (Dominic Cooper) and Danny's girlfriend Helen (Rosamund Pike).

Under the pretext of introducing Jenny to C.S.Lewis, David arranges to take the young teenager on a weekend jaunt to Oxford and to Paris for her 17th birthday.

But Jenny's parents Jack and Marjorie do not know the student has chosen this date and place to lose her virginity.

On her return, Jenny's friends are thrilled with her newfound sophistication but her teachers are disappointed in their prize pupil.

Just as the family's long-held dream of getting their daughter to Oxford seems within reach, Jenny is tempted by another kind of life.

An Educational will be showing at The Curzon Community Cinema from Friday at 7.45pm.
