Would you like a statue of Lord Archer in Weston?

LORD Archer may soon be a permanent fixture in Weston.
A group from Bonks Hill, in Hertfordshire, has asked Weston Town Council to have a bronze statue of the writer and former politician in the town.
The idea is being considered by the mayor’s think tank committee which is also discussing plans to have statues of legendary Weston residents past and present around the town.
Lord Archer was made a life peer in 1992 and became Baron Archer of Weston, on the advice of the then Prime Minister John Major.
Mayor John Ley-Morgan said: “Having a statue erected of someone still alive has to be discussed at length. We are also not sure where the funding for the statue would come from and if the group has any connection with Weston.
“We are talking about possibly having sculptures of famous Weston sons and daughters erected, such as Alfred Leete or John Cleese. It would be a great way of celebrating their achievements.”

Jeffrey Archer is a convicted perjurer, who has brought disgrace on himself and shame on Weston.
Surely there are better ways to spend taxpayers' money that in celebration of this man's "achievements"?
If we're going to have a statue of this crook in our town, let's go the whole hog and have one of another "famous" Weston resident, Aleister Crowley... it'd probably be less of an embarrassment.

One of Mark Lester as Oliver in the 1970's film would be good, much nicer for tourists to look at than that stupid "carrot."

To have a man was a former politician, suffering from several earlier controversies before finally ending up with a conviction for perjury is morally wrong. It sends out the wrong message. I really think if North Somerset council do go ahead, they are party to supporting a criminal and glorifying this.
I as a tax payer do not wish to have my money spent on such a wasteful item when there so many cuts going ahead which are impacting on peoples lifes.

I hope that Weston Town Council will reject the request to erect a bronze statue of Lord Archer in Weston.
If the council is considering erecting sculptures of famous sons & daughters Henry Butt and Jill Dando would be much more worthy of recognition than the likes of Lord Archer & John Clease.

Most definitely NOT!!!! Having already landed the local residents with a giant hypodermic needle in the town centre ( which they wish us to refer to as 'Silica', a form of quartz; although it hardly resembles that material) to remind us all what a debt we owe to drug addicts coming to the town, dropping out of rehab, then staying here, this would simply be yet another example of power-hungry councillors imposing their half-baked ideas on the vast majority of sane residents. If a statue is wanted of someone famous with associations with Weston super Mare then I would suggest that John Cleese would be a far better choice (though not necessarily the only suitable candidate). If, however, the idea is to erect a statue of somebody imfamous then there must surely be better candidates than a politician who was caught out telling lies (after all, isn't that what we expect politicians to do). Are there no mass murderers or other 'major' criminals in Weston's past to 'celebrate'.

There is no way, I can see, that anyone would want a statue of Mr Archer in our town. Much better to celebrate someone who has actually done something good for the town, like Henry Butt. I think we should all be able to say what and what not our money is spent on. If the councillors wont listen, get rid of them. Their job is to work for the people, or so they keep telling us! Jude

OK, he's a bit of a bad boy but he's paid his dues to Society. I tend to think of him as a likeable rogue. Does anyone know how he became a peer - was it hereditary or did he 'earn' it in an honourable fashion? If the latter, then shouldn't we acknowledge his achievements?
