On top of that they force down prices for hard-working farmers, under-cut local competition and, I'm fairly certain, are trying to take over the world. Do we need more in Weston?  No.  Especially not in the vicinity of other shops like the Co-op in Severn Road. Is it time for a boycott?  You pay your money and make your choice, but the consequences of your choice could be grave for both Weston and the wider world.    Report

I like being able to do all my shopping under one roof, and am happy to be able to pay less than I'd have to in the local outlets you are championing. I'm all for choice - but if my choice is to patronise Tesco, what gives you the right to get on your high horse and criticise me for it?    Report

My point is that it's no longer 'just a shop', it's an entity that controls a hell of a lot around it and affects a hell of a lot of people. As more and more people have made the decision to shop in Tesco, the shop has gradually spiralled out of control.  As an organisation it is amoral.  As people, we should be able to make a moral judgement and take our custom elsewhere. If you choose not to then so be it, but I think any right minded person should be able to see Tesco is not a force for good. If you don't see it then you need to look into it further.  Ten minutes of reading abotu what Tesco does and thinking about it should change your mind. Until that changes, no-one will have the power to stop it doing anything. I'm not saying we shouldn't try, but you might as well face facts that the situation isn't going to change anytime soon. Until then, ideas on a postcard?

If I go to ASDA, or Lidl, or even endure the five minute wait in Severn Road Co-op, I know that I'll have done my bit to stop the Tesco juggernaut from mowing down this country and everyone that's in it.    Report

10/08/2008, 11:36 AM CazInZumerzet Joined on 02/08/2008 Weston super Mare Posts 184 Re: Tesco Boycotts really make people taking part in them feel good about themselves and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.  I recall boycotting everything South African until my first visit there when I discovered every single brand available in supermarkets here, on the shelves of the same supermarkets there.  Even the then darling of the lefties (of which I was one) Laura Ashley, had a shop in Jo'burg.  Salutory lesson. My lifetime boycott is of MacDonalds and that seems to have really got the wind up them! To be perfectly honest with you I look forward to Tesco opening its shop around the corner in the Boulevard so that local shoppers, of whom I am one, can buy fresh locally sourced goods at reasonable prices.  Not currently available.  My mobility is limited and I no longer drive which makes reliable reasonably priced local shopping such a blessing.  Globalisation is a fact of life and Tesco isn't going to run away crying if Westonians oppose it but I do still genuinely admire people who tilt at windmills.  Old Westonians never die, they go out on the tide...    Report

Its a win-win for the consumer, more choice, more competitive pricing, you may want to still shop at Co-op have you not thought Co-op would have to lower their prices to compete, therefore you would be getting the same produce at a lower cost thus saving you money. Co-op I think is a bit of a joke, I used to live in Winscombe and the prices in that Co-op are huge, it was cheaper for me the drive to Morrisons buy the £20 worth of groceries and drive back.    Report

It's a fact of commercial life that if you cannot offer consumers what they want at competitive prices, someone else will.  In our case it's Tesco.  It might have been any of the others but there we go, that's life. It's not sad when people disagree, it's democracy. Old Westonians never die, they go out on the tide...    Report
