The Mercury's website today reveals six competing architects' designs for the new Grand Pier pavilion. From futuristic wave designs to swish glass shells and more traditional designs, and boasting features as varied as space-age looking monorails, eco-friendly wind turbines, sea-water swimming pools and rooftop music venues, the six proposals offer a host of possibilities.

Bit of a mixed bag, I feel. I like the Angus Meek design very much, but I am not so keen on the more outrageous ones - and what on earth was Grimshaw thinking with that vile pea-green colour?
Re: New pier designs published - what do you think?
As a Weston resident I would not consider any of the designs apart from the one put forward by Angus Meek which has common features of the previous pier i.e.. the towers !!
If it is going to be rebuilt we might as well have a modern good looking one!! Along with the new Tropicana and new sea wall along the promenade it all looks too good to be true.

I don't like the designs at all. It should be rebuilt in keeping with the towns history. People don't want modern or space age building. It would ruin the sea front all together.

I think some people are missing the point. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to do something really special. Why stick with the same old, same old? I say go for something really bold: The Acanthus Ferguson Mann design is unique and eye-catching. I would love to see it happen.

1. Birds nest wannabe 2. Interesting. How are the red arrows permanantly held in place? 3. Hollywood film set for Total Recall 4. Triangular warehouse 5. Less garish but a bit B+Q marquee. Why have wind turbines practically inside a building?! 6. Nice, but not Weston.

I agree, the best design is the one by Angus Meek which looks like a modern version of the old pier. The other designs apart from Ray Holes are just too whacky, and Ray Holes looks like the Lidl Distribution Centre on the M5 junction, and thats not a compliment!

The New Grand Pier.
I quite like the design by Angus Meek, it has the Victorian shape but
is going in the right direction for the future, a bit of fine tweeking and
i am sure they will get it right.

I thought they wanted a 21st century version of the old pier? Some of them have clearly never even seen the original. They're pretty futuristic and I don't think they would really look right at the end of a victorian pier. The only ones I would consider are the 2nd one (Angus Meek) and the 5th one (Ray Hole) because at least they have made it look similar with the turrets on the corners, and the wind turbines they're both using look pretty cool. Also I like the wavy roof on the promenade on the 2nd one. I'll be interested when more details are published on Thursday.

this is a one in a lifetime opportunity to rebuild the pier : AS IT WAS
if it isnt, weston will have a hideous monstrosity on the sea front forever.
so this is an opportunity to get it right, weston doesnt want a spaceship or post modern rubbish, we want a pier with victorian styling.
weston has thrown out tropicana plans time and time again, and this will go the same way, there was nothing wrong with the previous pavilion

and Grimshaw, no we dont need another skip on the seafront, thank you!
it also looks like a catapault ready to fire westons wasted ideas and rubbish back to Bristol, London and other places that have people who know nothing about weston's heritage.

Re: The New Grand Pier.
Much as I love Weston, the one thing about it that really p***es me off, is the fact that people just can't find anything positive to say - are we really such a town of flat-earthers that we will oppose any positive move to develop the town?
It's true, not all of the designs are particularly super. But there are one or two that are OK, and - in my view - one that is outstanding.
I know that the old pavilion was treasured by many people, but we must realise that it was built 78 years ago. Technology and design have moved on since then - even the architects who built it back in 1930 would not design it that same way again with access to modern techniques. It's time to accept that the old pavilion is gone, and understand that different does not mean worse.
Progress is inevitable, and the rest of the world seems to embrace it - why can't Weston?
