I have just seen the new designs for the garnd pier. Adfter looking at the god awful pictures I would like to know why there isn't an option on the poll for "Ditch these rubbish designs and put it back the way it was".
I imagine the one that will actually be built is which ever one looks most like a casino or other such building.
PUT IT BACK THE WAY IT WAS!

Re: GRAND PIER VOTE
Because it would be impossible?
There'd always be something "not right": be it the materials; the paint colour; the neon lighting colour; or even the position of the Ghost Train ("it used to be 6 feet closer to the end of the pavilion it did - it's a scandal the lack of attention to detail here! They should be ashamed of themselves").
Also, I suspect that they know that a lot of people would vote for "put it back as it was" if the option was there, and then they'd feel obliged to do so even if it isn't the best thing for Weston and/or the environment . I bet the heating bills were diabolical in the old pavilion.
One thing I have noticed, though -- nobody has been REALLY radical and suggested extending the pavilion to the shoreline, like (for instance) Paignton or Teignmouth piers, or building a second covered area halfway down the pier, like Brighton's late lamented West Pier. All the designs seem to be working on the basis that the concept remains the same as before... little "welcome area", then a long walk in the open air to a pavilion at the end. The monorail is the only departure from this in any of the designs.
no one cares about the cost of heating or electiric every one remember looking and seing that victorian building but now we are gonna have a modern piece of ****. well maybe not if the one by angus meek wins thats the only one relavent to the old building. they have so many memories about that building and if it was built the same everyone will remember the old and will carry on there memorise weston is the victorian pier and if its not gonna be that way then whats the point of having a new one. but i suppose if its built like the one by angus meek they will remember the old pier and think of carrying on there memeries. the others are rubbish espetialy the first its like god what was he thinking. no one would want scrap wavey metal as a pier

Re: GRAND PIER VOTE
Didn't "get" all the subtleties of that post but I think I sort of agree with the sentiment.
Angus Meek will be a reminder of the shape of the old building, at least from the front, whilst championing innovation underneath.
Last sentence completely bemuses me... scrap metal? pier? Is this "Scrapheap Challenge" or something? Now there's a thought :-)
when the site is cleared and the planking safe. how about three digital screen boards front/back and sides (bit like hyde park) put up to give the illusion that there's a pier there at night/day
then interchange them occasionally with a new design to fit, so we can get a 3D impression of what it might look like eventually.

Re: GRAND PIER VOTE
You could go the whole hog and get hologram machines, allocate a day to each design through the week with a virtual version of the pier visible... on a Sunday you could do something entirely off the wall instead, like stick Windsor Castle on the end, the World Trade Center or even Gordano Services ;-)

Interesting thought...

What a silly idea - Gordano Services?

Or a big painted wooden board like the Arsenal Stadium North Bank in the early 90s.
IKEA, I should reallly like the end of the pier to be a branch of IKEA. They'd really come in their millions then but would the meatballs and rollmops be unfair competition for fish 'n chippies?
Old Westonians never die, they go out on the tide...

I'm horrified, Caz... how can you possibly suggest that? Ikea??
Surely we have to support our own competing brands like...
...erm...
...erm...
Okay! You've won - it'll be Ikea. But I want a discount for being so open-minded, right?
And a free cruise to Scandanavia to boot, blasted Swedes... they get everywhere ;-)
erm. I just meant it to give the impression of what it could look like on a huge scale.
alton towers, Gordano, Ikea, is a bit silly

I personally think this is agreat idea Pete.
To put my pennies worth in to this topic "GRAND PIER VOTE" Who in their right mind has voted for the Angus Meek design???? Looks like a sweet factory! No class, no class at all... However beng generous if the tacky colours were to be changed for subtle green or blue tinted then it would look ok I suppose. How about a vote on that....? Get the garish colours removed from the design? At the moment it reminds me of a building advertising Skittles sweets with cans of Coke standing at the corners and at night it will look so out of place! As it is how will this compliment the traditional architecture or landscape around it?
My vote lay with "save the best til last" - Stride Treglown. Their designed was inspiring and for longevity, classic, non-intrusive, with fluid like qualities complimenting the waves of the sea.

...that's because it was intended to be a bit of a laugh.

i think the design by agus meek is brilliant it will look amazing once it is completed it was the end of an era when the pavillion burnt down now we must move forward but not forget the memories of the old one and start building new memories when the new pavillion is built come on you guys
