Are we all from the WSM area?

I was just wondering if everybody here is from the Weston area, or have you moved to the area from another place? Did you go to school in Weston Super Mare, or work in the area?

Hi Kay,
I am a Westonian but now live near Yeovil. Left the town in 1966 to go in the Army as a 'boy' soldier and when I came out I settled in South Somerset. Still got a brother and a sister there though. I visit Weston quite often and still enjoy a wander along the beach when it's empty :-)

Hello!
I am from Weston originally. I left when I was 21yrs in 1988 but will be moving back there in the summer of 2008.
I went to Oldmixon infants, Walliscote juniors and Wyvern comprehensive. My family are still in Weston.

Hi Kay,
I've been reading the online Mercury since they incepted it. I live in deepest Dorset but my family are in the Weston area. I grew up there, attended Wyvern and Weston Tech before leaving in 1979 for the forces life.
I am back there frequently and follow the saga of the Pool, knightstone (I used to use the pool there at weekends) and Birnbeck Pier (alls gone quiet on that front since a new owner took over - it depends on getting planning approval for anything there to do with North Somerset Council - who prefer to do projects in Portishead than the surrounding areas.

Sorry for the slow reply, Phoenix,
So you went to good old Wyvern too?! I quite enjoyed it there really.
My husband is in the forces, that's why we don't live in sunny Weston anymore. I miss the place though.

I suspect that the new build over the last few years makes residents originally from Weston in the minority. If not, then I am sure the 12,000 houses to be built between 2011 and 2025 will ensure it is! Now on the other hand, nearly all the primary route network roads have been here for generations... and there are no plans for more!

Hello, Kay . . .
I seem to be the oldie posting here. Born near Lacock at the beginning of WW2. After Dad came back from the forces we moved to Wraxall, and then Hutton. Educated at Hutton, and W-s-M Grammar School, and worked (banking) in Weston for four years. Transferred to Southampton 1960. Quit, and emigrated to Canada (Montreal, Que) 1966, and relocated to Edmonton (Alberta) in 1970. Over the years, several job related promotions meant relocations all around this Province, and the Yukon, and ended up retiring here. My parents left the Weston district (for Surrey) in 1972, but Mom (now 90) now lives in central Somerset.
I didn't like Weston much..... wet and dreary in winter, and a wet bank holiday Monday hell on roller skates. Talking of roller skates, a super winter's Saturday afternoon entertainment was to go onto the prom, just north of the Sanitorium. other than that, my favorite pastime was to get on my bike and go "over the hills and far away!" Last time I was there (2002) I can't say I liked Weston any better than I did when I lived there.
Second wife (Donna) is partially disabled from Rheumatoid Arthritis and SLE (Lupus). We have five kids between us..... 2 of yours, two of mine, and one of our own. Having turned out superbly, they all have left the nest and live in Edmonton (that's 300miles north from here). because we can be there in less than five hours, and we love the Lethbridge area so much, we've chosen to stay here and visit the kids six or seven times per year.
Lethbridge is 80 miles (1½hours) from the Crownsest Pass of the Rocky Mountains (we can see the mountains from our back door on most days) and that is our favorite summer destination. My favorite pastime is fly fishing for rainbow and cutthroat trout in the pristine streams and rivers that abound out in the Castle Wilderness, Crowsnest Pass, and Highwood Pass (Google (images) of them if you're interested) areas of the southern Canadian Rockies.

Not that it is a competition for who's the oldest, I was born in 1938 and my family moved to WsM in 1942. We lived in Ellenborough Crescent, No 21. I moved to Perth, Australia in 1969 following an engineering carreer. Using Perth as a base I worked in many countries in S.E. Asia until the traveling became too intensive and boring. When I found contract after contract coming my way in Mainland China, I decided to live here! I have a good home, "westernised" overlooking parklands (just like I did in Ellenborough Crescent) the climate is good, the beer is cheap, 30P for a large bottle and I am surrounded by young students learning Engrish from me. Every evening we have a rot of rarfs. My name of 'Logie' is derived from the Chinewse pronounciation of my name 'Roger' L's and R's get mixed up..

Good to hear from you logie . . . and an interesting career you've had. Apart from your fun with the language, how is it living in China? . . . ie, cost of living? acquisition of world news? getting around? politically? etc??? And no, I don't mind that you hijacked the reputation of being the most ancient one here, you're welcome to the moniker!!!
I'd forgotten about this thread though, and see my input was April 2006. Sadly, my wife died from complications of her medical conditions in April 2007. For several reasons, family politics and my love of the Rocky Mountains to name two, I've decided to stay here unless or until I'm forced to make the move.
My Mom is still playing the Duracell bunny (keeps going and going and going) at age 90, and I've decided that now I'm not 24/7 caregiver, I owe it to her to make the trip over again to see her, and also be at my nephew's wedding. Weston will be on the agenda as a place to re-visit, so I'll post my impressions when i get back to Canada.
I wonder if they'll have changed???

Welcome Ms Happy Smile. I check in once a week and have to say, sure as heck nothing much happens in here, does it? I have just got back from Hong Kong. Hate the place. They would rather you just sent the money and stayed at home. Cheers.
