bonjour - French garden treats

Bonjour!

I love French cuisine and what to know what would survive well in English climates to compliment my culinary creations.

Bonjour and welcome!

The key thing I've found with French cuisine is flavours. To that end I would highly recommend a good selection of herbs.

A reasonably sized Herb garden with Sage, Tarragon,Rosemary and Garlic would be a good start, but browse the Herb selections at your local Nursery for more to add as your ability and needs grow. We have just the right conditions for most herbs you will need.

For vegetable choice, alongside the main english vegetables, make room and time for some perennials common in French gardens such as Asparagus, Fennel , Artichokes and Chicory. Celery is used much more as a cooked vegetable abroad than here. Other salads vary too. Radicchio, Endive and Chives, Shallots rather than just Onions and Salad potatoes like Pink Fir Apple or Sante and Charlotte.

Fruit wise, I grow Grapes on my plot, just make sure you get expert advice and choose a suitable variety for your conditions.Blueberries can be cultivated in pots so the soil is right for them, Strawberries and Raspberries as well as Gooseberries can be put straight into the soil.

Much of the French style is based on how you use the ingredient rather than just the ingredients themselves so look to the right selection of produce then 'tweak' the recipe with the right flavourings.

I hope that helps in some way!
