It's a bit like tempting fate to ask, but fingers crossed, yes so far the worst I've had is a drunken male or two following me around the block a few times at night - I usually drop them off at the taxi rank if they catch up with me and decide they wanna be my ' best friend' - as that's probably where they were heading before they forgot.
I used to walk home from work through town at 3 or 4 in the morning ten years ago, and it feels no different walking about town at night now, if I got attacked I'd probably feel completely different about it. Weston streets can feel worse in the day when groups of loud people are hanging around pub doorways, swearing and shouting.

Having lived in cities in the past, I can only assume that anyone who finds Weston intimidating has either been infortunate enough to fall victim to a serious crime in the past - or led a very sheltered existence.

The other night, I had to walk from the railway staion along Neva Rd then along to the sea front at gone 11 pm. It was a bit windy causing the trees to make some eerie shadows. I did notice quite a few little groups of youths hanging around in the nooks and crannies - can only guess what they were up to. Yes, I felt a bit threatened and walked at a fairly brisk pace, regularly crossing over to the other side to minimise the risk of confrontation. And yes, I once lived in Bristol as a teenager and was beaten up or mugged twice.

Generally speaking yes. There are one or two spots where wisdom would dictate one avoids late at night but that is the same anywhere and everywhere. I have lived and worked in a number of cities before returning to WSM and have known some truly dangerous places and been a victim of street robbery ('mugging'). But, my understanding is that the reality of crime is far less than the fear of it. A course of Self-Defence can do wonders for your confidence.

I wonder if that was the same night I noticed a group of extra loud ones, as there were a bunch of 4 or 5 lads (16 or 17) heading that way and they were shouting and randomly hitting things like sign posts and smashing bottles on fences and things, haven't seen that for a while - probably underage drinkers heading back towards the station, me and the pooch kind of changed direction to avoid them as well.
Groups of young blokes that haven't learnt the rules of being in a pub/club like girls of the same age tend to be abit more spontaneously aggressive to impress mates, I nearly got heckled the other night by a kiddie showing off infront of friends - bring on the camera implants - more useful than a boob job for women I should really get a mobile.

I think the message I am getting here is, I generally feel safe but..........
Even as a big rufty tufty retired copper, I do not feel entirely safe. That is not the fault of the police, but a failure of society in general. There are many reasons for this breakdown, and you probably all know what they are, so I will not bore you with any detail. All I will say is report the problems you come across. If the police do not know of incidents, they can do nothing about it, but report it, and it will make a difference, in the end.

Reporting it ought to make a difference and yes, if we don't report it we can't complain if nothing gets done. However, since returning home to WSM I have had to dial 999 twice to report a crime, once when I was a victim of crime and once when I was actually watching a crime being committed.
On the first occasion two officers attended, apprehended the criminal in a nearby street, ticked him off and watched him swagger off laughing. I was very deeply affected and re-lived the crime and had nightnmares about it for several years since. The fact that the two pc's entirely failed to grasp the level of fear and shock I was suffering and went on to suffer made it worse. The second time I dialled 999 and described criminal acitivity taking place across the road from my home and the response from the person on the telephone was 'And what do you expect us to do about it...?'
There is something about both these events which indicates a worrying trend, to me at least. It suggests to me that I cannot rely on the police service to make me feel safe or to manage crime prevention or indeed to understand fully the effect of crime on us as individuals or as a society. I probably wouldn't now report a crime but wouldn't like to be too categorical about that since it may depend on circumstances.

Surely just moving away from Weston would do?

i feel safe from most crime, but not when all the drunken louts are hanging in pub doorways inflicting the stench of BO and smoke onto anyone who walks by. the real problem in weston seems to be near the playhouse all those pubs are full of old yobs who spit and smoke with no regard to polite society. we should ban smoking in all public places and remove the yobs from the streets, making them safe for young and old alike

if you think about it though it is the older ones, rather than the younger ones so maybe a dying breed.
I have to navigate, these same kind of belching , drunk folk letting off wind, smoke and shouting quite alot living in town - but I think they are generally harmless, everyone bahaves like that when drunk, they just don't think they do - it's a drug innit ? - affects the brains ability to see situations correctly, blots out the bad bits for a short time but is really a depressant - most people never except the logic of that, just like some smokers defend smoking by saying "not all cancer victims die from smokin' you know" yeah, right whatever...I hate that kind of attitude - especially when they know you've given up fags and booze - but that's another story.

For all of those that feel safe walking the streets of Weston please tell that to the poor chap who got a right kicking for trying to stop some teenage yobs from vandalizing the ticket machine at the railway station.I take it the lot that feel safe are the ones that would have walked on by and left them to it !!. I feel sorry that he was injured but its pleasing to see that someone stood up for what is right and wrong. If more people made a stand against these hooligans and thugs the country would be in a better state. I can hear you all now saying vigilantes are not the way to go but nor is putting up with bullying thugs and letting them carry on their own way, most of them would not like their own medicine returned anyway, cowardly thugs !!
