The Odeon

I went there the other day to watch a film, which was an expensive mistake.

When I reached the front of the queue the lady asked me if I wanted luxury or standard. Having suffered extreme back ache last time out, in screen 4, I opted for the luxury option.

Now, I don't object to paying a little extra for a more comfortable experience, but I have one issue.  When I recently went to the cinema in Bristol all the seats were the same as the 'luxury' seats at Weston's Odeon and, if I remember correctly, they were a little cheaper.

It's time the Odeon upgraded all the seats and stopped mugging off the people of Weston.

I agree with you, Wilko. I love a trip to the cinema, but genuinely feel that Weston offers a below-par cinematic experience.

It's expensive, the seats (non-luxury ones for me, I'm not made of gold) are terribly uncomfortable, the lack of leg room is near-crippling, and to be honest, the sound quality is very poor.

Like or loathe the Tropicana proposals, one thing I'd be firmly in favour of is a new cinema for the town.

in screen 4 you get neck ache having to look up at the screen too - the whole floor in there needs to be raised a couple metres.

I think a small coke is about £3.50 or maybe more...ouch, glad I was just the guardian holding the purse.

Last cinema I remember enjoying was the one in Bridgwater about 3 or 4 years ago Scotts cinema ? - it was nice and warm, comfy seats & an ice-cream lady/usherette came in at half time 'interval' and sold icecreams in tubs with little wooden spoons - which was how I remember cinemas as a kid.

- I heard in the really old days people would have to stand for the national anthem at the end of a cinema performance, must have been a leftover from a patriotic/war thing ?

Screen four is the very worst cinema experience I've ever had.  I left with back ache, neck ache and sore knees.

I would be in favour of singing Land of Hope and glory before everything including films, but not the national anthem.

Just read about Vue's plans for the new cinema at the Tropicana - makes the Odeon look even more outdated and shabby when you make such a comparison...

The last time I went to the Odeon was the last time, if you see what I mean.  I don't remember the screen numbers but upstairs to watch something with quet and sometimes thoughtful chunks of time utterly ruined by loud noise 'bleeding' through from another screening.  On commmenting about this downstairs - total apathy - nothing to do with any of them and they couldn't care less anyway.  Fair enough.  I vote with my feet the same as everyone else and either watch films at the Playhouse, Bristol or anwhere else I happen to be, including here at home

Odeon might well be a building of historical significance but as a cinema it fails.  Roll on Vue, they have my support already.

You're spot on, there. It's a terrible cinema.

Close it and extend Tesco. Or open a trendy wine bar that sells continental beers for £4 a pint.  They would be only sensible things to do.

How about making it into one big auditorium, and re-employing it as a music venue? I'm too young to remember when the Beatles played there, but it happened - what are the odds of Weston attracting a big-name music act these days? Nil.

Even the likes of Bridgwater has a better recent track record than Weston when it comes to pulling in bands, and that's down to the town's lack of venue, rather than any lack of interest.

With a new cinema set for the seafront (hopefully) this presents an ideal opportunity to do something with the Odeon site - and by 'something', I mean a leisure development, not more bedsits for junkies.

A music venue would be great.  Presumably you could fit a lot of people in there if it was turned into one auditorium.  Perhaps we could even attract some of the big name comics.

I feel excited talking about it, but it'll never happen.  Think of all the old biddies above Tesco.

As a child growing up in Weston donkey's years ago it was of course a one screen cinema and huge, but I haven't a clue how many it seated.  There was a stalls and circle and big downstairs and upstairs foyers so I guess it was spacious but enough for a modern concert venue?  I don't know but there may be someone 'out there' who would.

I agree with Wilko about planning permission for a modern multi use concert/show venue and think it's probably unlikely but, if the beach area of town really takes off it might be a possibility.  It is an exciting thought, our own indoor arena space right in the heart of the old town.  I do remember Cliff Richard and The Shadows performing there and have a copy of the Beatles poster when they gigged at The Odeon but sadly can't upload it here.  The bill included 'Britain's Fabulous Disc Stars'-The Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Sons of the Piltdown Man,  The Lana Sisters, Billy Baxter and Tommy Quickly, and Tommy Wallace and Beryl.  There were two shows at 6.15 and 8.15 and  8/6  6/6  4/6 were three ticket prices, and for the youngsters on the forum those prices were approximately 45p  35p and 25p.  I can't see from the poster what year it was but it was an evening in July and I'm guessing about 1958/60? Anyone remember it?

What amazes me are the numbers of acts on the bill to support The Beatles, and whatever happened to Sons of the Piltdown Man?  I did see Cliff Richard as he and the Shads went horseriding and actually rode past the girls school in the Locking Road.  Very clever!

It is a little bit sad the way that corner of town has become a bit seedy and run down.  The opposite corner is truly fabulous architecture but quite crumbly, and the Odeon itself is sadly in need of some TLC.  I include in that the traffic island with those strange huge marble ash trays/litter bins. A good clean might help, like so much of Weston.

Does anyone else remember Saturday morning flicks for kids?  Ice cream dropped over the balcony and more besides!  Peashooters enabled the bold to fire paper and spit balls at the big silver screen which would stop the film and bring the manager with the mike onto the stage to restore order.  Best of all the ice-cream and Kia-Ora sellers who walked backwards down the asles selling from huge trays.  Choc ices tuppence.

Alright I'm wallowing in nostalgia but it really was so cool in the Odeon then, it even smelled good.  Back to reality and I wonder if Tesco will simply overflow from where they are to the Odeon corner?

PS.  Best ever cinema experience in this country, Dominion Leicester Square to watch Dancing with Wolves.  Individual slightly back tilted humungous armchair type seating in warm clean fragrant and roomy surroundings, massive screen and good raked floor.  Remember it still with great warmth.

Anyone else see the letter in this week's Mercury, but a Tropicana nay-sayer, claiming Weston already has an 'excellent' cinema? Tosh.

The writer goes on to claim that 'the last film I saw there, the sound quality was excellent'. I am incredulous. What was the film? Gone With The Wind?

For the record, I did - against my better judgement - venture into Weston Odeon this week, and watched a very good film.

However, I can categorically tell you that the sound quality in Weston Odeon is very poor compared to the Vue cinema at Cribbs Causeway.

Now we know Weston will be getting a Vue, and I for one can't wait.
