It's great that you have got a webcam sorted out, shame it had to be in such sad circumstances, but I think a webcam is a real connection of a town to other parts of the world - webcams & streaming video predate youtube, but youtube has don a good job in training the masses that videos & images on-line can be interesting & educational - I remember back in late 2001 watching a live stream of Time Square in real-time (new york) complete with sound (as it was their server that was taking the load) my then little niece and dog were capivated by watching the tourists and the taxi's.
It'll mainly be seagulls 'social networking' on the Weston one I guess, the Burnham one was a bit like that, but with faster broadband speeds these days a webcam is a point of interest, when people realise it is there.
If the page has links to official places to send donations that would be cool as there are lots of facebook groups that could do with a central funding body - rather than bits here and there.

I'm glad it's up now - i live in france (originally from weston) and have just watched the sun setting in my old home as well as take my first live look at the pier. Really sad but glad i can watch it being cleared and rebuilt live and not just through photos. Can we get more webcams around other parts of the town?

Re: Grand Pier Webcam
So far I have only looked at it after dark but this project shows enormous promise and will soon become a time-waster. Bit like navel gazing!
The picture quality seems fine, albeit at night, and it's easily possible to watch changes to cloud formation. Quite a surreal scene in the foreground isn't it. I'm grateful to whomever we need to thank for this. Does anyone remember the one that used to be on the college roof, when all you could ever see from it was raindrops or...nothing... Well done.
Old Westonians never die, they go out on the tide...
Congrats to the Mercury for the Grand Pier web cam. This is going to be
fantastic to watch as the work to get the Pier Pavillion rebuilt gets
underway. We'll have a birdseye view of what is going on - and even the
Michael's can use it to keep an eye on the workmen!

Re: Web cam's great
Absolutely love the new weston pier web cam. Not just because it shows the progress of the pier but also as it gives a handy guide to us windsurfers about the conditions at weston. If you could have another cam pointing the opposite way, and including lots of sea in the picture then that would be even better.
thanks

Re: Grand Pier Webcam
loving the grand pier webcam. but it would be good if it could be turned to the left a bit so we could see more of the pier.
they might have done it like that to show it in perspective, against the background of the hotel lights etc. where as if it was just pointing at the pier, people might not be able to recognise which part it was.

Re: Grand Pier Webcam
True i guess you have a point but if they turned it like every month you would be able to see more of the pier as its being rebuilt.
True - but there's not really anything happening there yet, is there? I'm sure we'll see more movement and variety in the webcam once things start moving...
what they could do with (if it exists) is a camera with more than one lense, maybe 3 lenses to cover left middle right!
it's either that or another cam up there pointing another way (would double the cost of bandwidth unless some sort of 'splitter' gizmo was on it like manycam software) one cam with a moveable part might get stuck or need repair - man on ladder call out gets expensive. So I expect it is down to the cam budget or that bug eyed cams aren't invented yet. I'm a Video blogger and an Internet Thingy too! You can twitter me: @lemonknickers
