Traffic in Regent Street
Reply Quote
Has anyone else noticed the increasing amount of cars, vans and lorries that are using the "Bus only" section of Regent street? I work for First Bus, an sometimes spend long periods in Regent Street monitoring our services. The signs at both ends are very clear but motorists choose to ignore them, and I have seen no attemps by the council or police to enforce this traffic ban. With the speed that some traffic ilegally travel through this section it is only a matter of time before someone is injured or killed.

Didn't they install something called 'bus gates' in Bath to stop this sort of thing?

They have in Bath yes. It is a set of lights on red will only turn to green when a bus aproaches. Not ideal as cars still get behind a bus and follow it through. The best scheme is used in Taunton where bollards lower into the road and then rise after a bus has gone through.

i never realised regent street was only for buses, i hope you are nice to all the people who use the disabled spaces, and to those with the relevent permits, and also the hackney carraiges( you probably know them as taxis) who have the same exemptions as your buses. Maybe thats why you never see police or council officials booking them........... oh and maybe you could tell your wonderfull bus drivers that  , when meeting a fellow bus coming the other way, not to stop for a chat and hold up the rest of the traffic( oh yes they do) regards furbs....

When I mentioned  to the bus only section i was reffering to the section from the Post Office to Barclays Bank where in both locations on the road in 3 foot high letters it says "Buses Only".

I am aware that permits are issued, these are normally for local businesses that need access to their premisses, not as a pass for use as a through route. The disabled parking is not within this section so they are not a problem.

If you read the signs by the post office and at the pier end it says Taxi`s from 11pm to 6am. It also says access for private hire from 11pm until 6am, so why do they use the section 24 hours a day?. I would also point out that this is a 20 mph zone which is often ignored by all vehicles.

I would try and see if the increase in traffic relates to the increase in seasonal(tourist) traffic.

The fact that most people who visit Weston seem to think road rules don't apply to them may account for a lot of it.

People on business, more so those who own businesses, tend to think they have a right to stop and leave the car/van wherever they want because they are busy and use any route they need to get to the money.

The new road markings in and around the town centre have only added to the confusion in what is an already over complicated traffic system. One ways, pedestrianisation and evening/daytme only restrictions all mean we need a book the size of the gettesburg Bible to understand just where we can and can't go! That;s bad enough if you live here and drive daily. If you are visiting from a sane place and have never seen the bewildering array of directions and signs, you have little chance of avoiding mistakes.

yes the 20mph is ignored by buses as well, and taxis have full access from both ends of regent street 24 / 7, this can be checked with the council if you wish....is it not a shame you dont realise that some people just make mistakes.. even bus drivers make mistakes sometimes dont they.....regards furby

I know you've read the essay on the sign which explains why that's inaccurate.

For what it's worth, I have noticed a small increase in cars and vans in the last few weeks, but I've also noticed a big increase in buses that force cyclists out of the road when they have right of way.  Usually First Buses, but some ACLs do it too.  It used to be so friendly and cooperative there, earlier in the year. Please don't punish us because cars are getting in your way!
