What are they thinking about, the design for the new pier is totally hideous, why not rebuild to how it was, traditional and beautiful, this new piece of structure will be an eyesore on the sea front and so out of place, and what will happen if it is not successful!!!!
That's a matter of opinion. Are you basing your views on the original Angus Meek design or the one that was actually given planning approval? I think the one they're going to build is actually rather similar in design to what it replaces, albeit more contemporary.
To be honest, I was never a great fan of the pier as it was... nothing more than a glorified aircraft hanger, with attractions within... the pre-1932 version was much better, but from what I've seen most of the people who have professed a great attachment to the pier have done it because of memories rather than any architectural features.
As I think myself and others have said before if they tried to rebuild a "carbon copy" of the pier as it was on 27th July last year people would find something wrong about it. The toilets wouldn't be dirty enough, the glass would be too shiny and the paint too new.
Better to make a fresh start, create something that will entertain visitors and locals for generations to come.
Sean, are you the offcial spokeperson for the new design or something?
You use the same arguments time and time and time again.
Please try and understand that some of us think that the new design is hideous and that it should have been rebuilt as it was, 'glorified aircraft hanger' or not. That 'glorified aircraft hanger' kept going for a long time and pulled in a lot of people who developed an affinity and deep affection for the place. Now it's gone and we who loved the old design are gutted and feel that the owners should have honoured the old design by re-building it how it was.
I spent a lot of my childhood in Weston and I felt the Grand Pier was a hideous construction, hence why I tended to spend my time on Birnbeck instead which was everything a pier should be...
So I'm excited by the new design, is there anything wrong with that Busman??? I am as entitled to my opinion as you are to yours, and no I am not involved with the redevelopment at all.
I bet the folks in 1932 were saying "God help us! what a hideous design! bring back the old design" -- had folks listened then you wouldn't have had the pleasure of the pier you so loved. Hold that thought...
REQUEST TO THE WESTON MERCURY: On the Grand Pier section of the website, on the 2009 news stories can you replace the pictures of the original Angus Meek design with the one that's actually going to be implemented, please??
It's causing huge confusion to people. Many I've spoken to in pubs etc. around Weston still believe that the red "coke can" towers etc. are going to be built, whereas we all know they are not. That decision was made when the planning application was put in back in early December... so why are news stories in March still carrying the old defunct proposal?????!?!?
That picture is from September, before the change from colours to white... why are you still using it for what are supposed to be "breaking news" stories?
For the record it is NOT going to look like this...
Only through lights... from what I remember, changing it back to white, and putting the domes on the top of the towers to match the entrance to the Grand Pier, were two of the changes that Kerry and Michelle M insisted upon.
i loved the pier as it was but they carnt do it now think of how meny years it was when that was built there is no way they could of rebuilt it to the same but i think its time to change whe something happens like a fire you update things like the pier i think the new pier is going to be a huge success
I loved the old pier! i'm 30 now and I can remember going there when I was 3 years old! and when it burnt down I actualy cried!
But the new design looks great and I for one will be in weston on the big day it opens!
I Just hope and prey the attractions we all loved like the crazy house, dogems, ghost train and the little train along with fruit machines and arcade games are all in there waiting for us! when the old girl returns with her beautifull new dress :)
