Re: The New Grand Pier.
The Angus Meek one is more traditional and therefore more the sort of thing that Westonians are used to, but I like the idea of being
able to go on the roof which the Stride Treglown design offers. I would
be interested to see more detail, but I can't be bothered to get out
from behind my computer screen to visit the Winter Gardens - any chance
the Mercury can tell us what the designs actually contain i.e. hotel,
casino, amusements, cinema, charity shops? And why the eco-theme in all the designs - huge glass solar power panels, ugly wind turbines etc. since when did the Michaels need to save money?
Unfortunately I didn't manage to get my crayons out before the deadline, I had an idea which incorporated Lord Archer sat atop a giant donkey.
What do you think of the pier designs? It seems that the Mercury vote has two clear front-runners. My favourite isn't one of them, but they're both good. Is it coincidence that the front-runners are pictured against blue skies, or is that clever marketing?
The BBC and itv local news covered the designs in completely different ways. The BBC loved Angus Meek's design but itv slated it as "four beer cans" or something like that. Is that having an effect?
Does it matter what the design is anyway? Aren't the setting and the contents more important than the appearance? Isn't any pavillion better than an empty platform or the twisted burnt structure?
Bit of a flurry of votes for Stride Treglown this morning! I guess that architect must have a lot of friends, as I can't see many others voting for it!!!

Re: The New Grand Pier.
If it helps people make up their mind which design to vote for, tomorrow's Mercury will feature a comprehensive breakdown of each idea, plus plenty more pictures.
Its important to remember that these are the first ideas - not the
final plans. Nothing is ever built according to the first sketch the
architect does - they provide concepts and suggestions for a direction,
not a final design. So people shouldn't get their hackles up
immediately, but should comment on the aspects they like and don't like
so that in the end we get something innovative and different.
I think there are some really interesting and exciting ideas from the
architects. I like the fact that we could have the world's first
'green' pier, with wind turbines and solar panels and so on. I like the
suggestions from some that we could walk on top of the pavilion and
enjoy the views across the bay. I like the ideas for a monorail or
similar rather than an old fashioned land train.
I'm a Westonian born and bred and of course I want the new pier to be
in keeping with our town and reflect our history, but just compare any
of these designs with the old-fashioned piers around Britain -
Brighton, Bournemouth, Southport - there would be nothing like in the
country, perhaps even in the world. How exciting is that? Talk about
putting us on the map.
And how refreshing it is that its not all talk - the Michaels will actually make it happen!

I don't like the designs at all. It should be rebuilt in keeping with the towns history. People don't want modern or space age building. It would ruin the sea front all together.
Sue.....
What people Sue? People just like you perhaps? This is the 21st century and all over the world people are responding with exciting and innovative designs and ideas of their own. China's Olympic stadia for example and the work taking place in London in preparation for 2012. So 'people' of Weston want to remain firmly rooted in the past, I think not. The Victorians would be ashamed because they were brave and innovative, they pushed the boundaries and thought of the future, not their past. It's really time the people of this town did the same.
Old Westonians never die, they go out on the tide...

Re: Pier Designs
I Agree that an empty platform is no good, Angus Meeks proposal is
nearly there i think, a bit of fine tuning needed though,
as for all the people against modern change well think about this,
when the Victorian piers where constructed they where thought to
be ultra modern for there time, lets move on with the times i say,
in 100 years time all the modern buildings of today will be old hat.
lets get Weston into the 21st century with a real statement of design.
