Can just imagine sitting there with a cool beer or a glass of wine in my hand on a balmy summer's evening, pondering the meaning of life and maybe enjoying a good novel...
You will only be allowed to read novels you have bought on the Pier!

Re: New pier designs published - what do you think?
Im writing from Santa fe , New Mexico. I grew up in Weston Super Mare running around on the pier and in the arcades. My first girlfriend worked in the chip shop at the pier entrance, i had my first kiss there. Well sad day when the pier was lost.
Last year i went to see my mother in Brighton. They also had a devestating fire on thier pier, Sadly for Brighton they have not rebuilt thier land mark. Great Britains Seaside resorts have a place in our History and need to be preserved with pride. Brightons attitude to thier pier and its place in thier daily lives disgusted me.
The plans for the new Weston Pier look great, I hope it happens, Then a whole new generation of first Kisses can happen there.

Unfortunately, it would have been impossible to please everyone - even rebuilding it exactly as it was would have been branded a missed opportunity in many quarters.
The overwhelming majority of people who expressed a preference for one design over the others picked Angus Meek. I think this design has come as close as possible to pleasing the masses, and I think the Michaels are to be commended for taking public views into account ahead of making their choice.

Is it stupid? I think the staff used to stop people taking their own drinks onto the pier (it's annoyed many people being told to throw their drink away or not walk up the pier) and I guess that's what motivated the earlier comment. Why won't they ban books bought elsewhere if they sell books?
it would be bad business sense to ban people with books people have been doing all sorts on the pier for years so trying to stop it now just wouldnt work of course people would still spend money on the pier so there is no actual need to stop people bringing a drink on or even a book ,

Re: The New Grand Pier.
I think drinks and books are quite different things... you go into most pubs or cafés and they will say "Only food purchased here may be eaten on this premises" or whatever - I've never seen anything remotely similar when it came to books.
Grand Pier isn't a bookshop, it's a pier. And it would be foolish of the folks running the thing to say "you can't drink in our bars and cafés if you bring your own books" because people would simply go elsewhere and that's just bad business practice as on a pleasantly warm summer's day their veranda tables would be a perfect place to sit and read.
I Used to take a can of larger on the pier and just sit on the benches enjoying the sea air ...I did'nt take any books on but I always used to sit down and read my paper! and they was bought else where lol
Sorry, didn't mean to accuse you of being a lager lout!! In Glastonbury we have this problem with folks sitting around drinking cans of "Special Brew" (or whatever the modern equivilent is) in large quantities and they exude significantly less "sartorial elegance" than a bearded CAMRA-member with his well kept pint of "Butcombe" in a handled glass... :-)
Anyway, I've turned my attention now to Furby's excellent plans for Birnbeck Island. I think within the cultural arts centre there will have to be a Real Ale Bar where us old men with our pints of Butcombe Bitter or Rich's Cider can sit and chat (a roaring log fire in the winter would be a welcome addition to the plan) whilst the "bright young things" party with their Fosters and Strongbow down the road.
