You could go one step further, and establish a micro-brewery. Just think, meet your mates on the Island, step into the mash tun, link arms and tread the hops!....or is that another drink I'm thinking of ??
- arts gallery - micro-brewery - "brewery tap" with regular guest ales - land train from Grand Pier to terminus on the island - cinema similar to Arnolfini

Re: The New Grand Pier.
This we.ek's Mercury included a piece by Charlotte Richardson on page 3 which included the line -
The winning team's design also included plans to create a 'complimentary alternative' to the town's busy seafront, where visitors can explore rock pools, birdwatch and see the sun rise over the coast'.
Ooops.
Old Westonians never die, they go out on the tide...
I thought the pier design that was chosen was by far the best of the bunch, but wasn't completely sure about the gaudy colours - but judging by the picture on the front of today's Mercury, the colours have been toned down a lot.
I think the design as it looks now is excellent, so well done to all involved - and I'm loving the observation tower idea, can't wait to get up there.
Not sure if I have this right but are the colours lighting effects, and that the building will be white?

My thoughts on the new weston pier designs:
firstly i would like to say that the new designs for the weston pier are horrible! they are far to new and contemporary for weston, we need to keep westons historic background alive, we should have used this chance to re invent this pier and make it look like it did before the first fire! It needs to stay old, it should have old carosels and slot machines from the 1930's. It would then be an entertaining and historic pier. Having a new contempoary pier will attract the wrong people, it will make weston tacky which it has already started to do and having a brand new pier will look so wrong!
I think the new owners are making a very big mistake!!! They need to keep it simplistic, cultured, and old fashioned. It is after all a big part of westons historic background!
I would like to add that i am only 22 and have grown up with many memories of the old pier, i will be VERY sad to never smell the old wood on the old pier and to ride on the old ghost train! I spent many hours in the kids play area on the second floor. Having a brand new pier will ruin kids, it will spoil the sky line of weston and push weston into CHAV CITY!!!
im sorry to be so blunt but i would be happier to see the pier be knocked down to see it re built! It will never be the same again!
oh, and why are they changing the walkway up to the pier?????? What is wrong with keeping what's left of the pier that was fortunate not to burn down!!!!
The owners make me so mad!!! Their priority should be to keep weston alive, not to keep money in their pockets!
I can't believe they are being so selfish!
Thanks, Rant over!
Oh p.s If it takes longer to build than the tropicana then you can forget it, i might have grand children before then!
Thanks for the opportunity to have our say about the new plans! Hope this was helpful!
Re: New pier designs published - what do you think?
Completely disagree,
Any attempt to produce a facsimile of the 1930s Grand Pier will, ultimately, be a failure. People will recognise that it "ain't quite right" in whatever way and, of course, it won't be the original will it? An attempt to re-create something that, in my opinion, was starting to show its age anyway - more like an aircraft hanger than a modern entertainment facility.
The fire was a tragedy for everybody, but from the ashes can come something truly special - and the memories can't be erased. And I am looking forward immensely to seeing this new pier which appears to have vision and should be quite something else.
Re: New pier designs published - what do you think?
The first pier was destroyed in the 1930s. Did it ever have 1930s amusements in it? I thought they came in the second pier and the first was a concert hall or theatre or something like that.
I agree with Sean. It's time to move on. After a sad incident, Weston has the chance to build something interesting there. The basic design is already more conservative than I thought it should be, but let's give it a go!
Re: New pier designs published - what do you think?
I'm one of those who wishes that they had simply unearthed the original pavilion plans (ie for the structure which burned down a few months ago) and simply made an exact replica.
However, as someone has quite rightly pointed out, that would leave the 'new' pavilion open to a lot of criticism from those (no doubt like myself) who would nit-pick and point out areas which 'weren't quite right'.
I don't know, it's a tough one to call. I still say it would have been a good idea, despite slight reservations.
Now I'm know luddite, but I universally hated all of the front-running new designs and only marginally approve of the newly approved design now that's it has been revised to be in white:
I still don't 'like' it though - it's far too modern. Those concerned should have specified a design that looked architecturally 'old' and graceful in keeping with the old design. Not 'fake' old, but structurally complimentary to the old design and the properties on Weston's sea front.
Re: New pier designs published - what do you think?
As would no doubt be obvious from my previous posts I can only disagree.
The pavilion on the end of the Grand Pier was akin to an aircraft hanger... a large building that protected what was within from the weather, nothing more and nothing less. Whatever the merits of what was within, the building itself was - effectively - nothing much to write home about. Bit of art deco exterior, completely plain interior.
The new one is well thought out and should be an exciting place to visit. A great improvement.
I'm actually excited about it!! So much that I will probably be back living in Weston in a month or two's time...
