ROADWORKS which start tonight (Monday) will close a section of a busy North Somerset road.

The A370 between Congresbury and Backwell will be closed overnight between 8pm and 6am from today until June 26.

The closure starts at the Smallway and B3133 junction and lasts until the road reaches the Brockley Combe traffic lights.

A diversion will be in place via the B3133 (High Street, Brinsea Road, Stock Lane), the A38 (Bristol Road, Red Hill, Bristol Road), Downside Road and Brockley Combe Road.

Work will then continue along the road between the Brockley Combe traffic lights and Chelvey Road, in Backwell, between June 29 and July 3.

Temporary traffic lights will be in operation between 8pm and 6am during this second week of roadworks to ensure the A370 is able to remain open.

Elfan Ap Rees, who is North Somerset Council’s executive member for highways, said: “This busy road is being patched in preparation for surface dressing next year.

“We are having to close the road for the first week to allow our contractors to work safely, but will be using traffic lights in the second week where conditions allow.”
