SECRET World has received one of its tiniest badger cubs ever, just days after author Sir Terry Pratchett launched its £4.4million appeal for a wildlife hospital.

The cub, named Hope, weighed just 100g and was found with a grown female badger who was injured and sheltering in a garden summerhouse in Crewkerne, near Yeovil.

This rescue comes shortly after the East Huntspill-based charity launched its Call of the Wild Appeal, along with Discworld author Sir Terry, to build a new wildlife hospital at the centre.

Secret World staff discovered the badger pair were not mother and daughter and Hope is now being fed by a syringe.

The centre’s founder, Pauline Kidner, said Hope’s mum may have given birth in a nearby set and then abandoned it leaving her tiniest daughter behind.

She said: “We can only assume that her cries were heard by another female who was attracted to the summerhouse in search of food.

“The female will be returned to the wild shortly but Hope will be staying with us until she has been taught how to fend for herself.”

Secret World will be organising a range of fundraising events to get the public involved in its Call of the Wild Appeal over the next two years. One of the first will be a family bike ride.
