Afternoon dance sessions dropped

SOCIAL dances have been axed from the Winter Gardens programme due to lack of profit.
The summer season dances hosted by Sid Gateley have been cut back, with the Wednesday afternoon slot being axed and other dates dropped from the Weston venue.
General manager Mark Lammiman said the decision had been taken because the sessions were not generating enough money.
He added: “We have to take a very commercial view on some of the things we have run, and some of the Sid Gateley shows just don’t stack up.
“But while the demand for some ballroom events is increasing, the midweek ones just aren’t profitable for us.”
Although the dances are open to all, they do tend to attract an elderly audience.
Mr Lammiman said: “Here we have a strong selection of entertainment aimed at all age groups, but it has to be profitable.
“I can understand their disappointment, but we have a responsibility to our team to drive the business forward.”
