Two masked thieves have been arrested by firearms officers after storming into a village shop and stealing a cash tin and a handbag.

The men, who were wearing hoods and masks, entered Congresbury Village Stores at about 5pm yesterday (Tuesday) and attempted to steal items from behind the counter.

However, brave shop staff challenged the men, who the fled the scene in a red Ford KA after stealing a cash tin and a handbag.

They were driving on the A370 towards Weston-super-Mare when they were stopped by two firearms officers near Puxton Park, in Hewish, and arrested only a few minutes after the break-in.

The stolen property was recovered from the car and the two men, aged 42 and 46, were taken to Bridgwater custody centre.

PC Simon Broad, from the Somerset Investigations Team, said: “We understand that an incident of this nature can be extremely distressing for shop staff, who in this case acted very courageously in challenging the thieves.

“I want to reassure the local community that crimes of this type are relatively uncommon in villages such as Congresbury.

“The police unit who responded – two firearms officers from our tri-force operations department – were quick to locate and deal with the suspects, which I hope provides further reassurance to local residents.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact PC Broad via the 101 number, quoting the reference 5217028307.
