AN ICE cream parlour in Weston has been awarded a certificate of excellence from TripAdvisor.

Husband and wife team Peter and Jan Field launched PJ’s Ice Cream Parlour in Royal Parade eight years ago.

They had visited Weston to see Jan’s sister – and ended up buying the property.

PJ’s has now received a TripAdvisor certificate of excellence, which is awarded to businesses or properties which consistently achieve outstanding reviews on the website.

Peter said: “We are absolutely delighted because we didn’t expect to achieve that.

“We always try to do our best with the range of ice creams we offer.

“I took early retirement in 2001, and we decided to set up what was then the only ice cream parlour in Weston.

“We’ve grown to have the biggest range of ice cream in the country.”

About five years ago, PJ’s became the first parlour in the country to introduce sweets into its ice creams.

Peter said: “We were the first to start that, and it has grown nationally now as well.

“We have something in the region of 80 specialist children’s ice creams, and thousands of combinations of ice cream sundaes.”

Peter said it was the quality of its products which makes the business stand out from competitors.

He said: “We will never go below a certain level of quality.

“We’ve also never put the prices up in three years.”

The milk comes from South West producers, including Marchfields Farm.

Peter and Jan recently took a trip to Italy, so they could compare the quality of European products with those being created in the South West.

Peter said: “In my humble opinion, we beat them hands down.

“The South West ice creams are creamier, tastier and more consistent.”

PJ’s has also started selling milkshakes and coffees and Peter and Jan’s daughter Rachel Clifford and her husband Lee are going to help run the business.

Peter and Jan have just signed another 10-year lease for the property.
