Fedoras, trilbies and berets were the theme of the day at a Weston-super-Mare care home this week.

Staff at Beach Lawns Residential and Nursing Home, on Beach Road, hosted a hat day and competition for its residents on Monday.

The event showcased the residents’ creative talents as they were asked to personalise straw hats with ribbons, flowers and feathers before presenting them to a panel of judges.

Eileen Chisholm, aged 96, was crowned the winner with her teal hat, which she originally wore to her great-grandson’s christening.

Home manager Lyn Taylor said: “Our residents had great fun and everyone really went to town making and digging out their favourite, most extravagant hats. Eileen’s hat was really wonderful.”

Sanctuary Care, a not-for-profit group which runs the home, hosted the event as part of its 20th anniversary celebration and has plans to hold a number of events over the next 12 months.
