A FATAL road traffic collision is causing major tailbacks on the M5.

A FATAL road traffic accident is causing major tailbacks on the M5.

The crash took place southbound between Burnham-on-Sea and Weston-super-Mare about 4.30pm today (Sat).

A car was reported to have lost control and left the carriageway, bursting into flames.

One person was trapped in the vehicle and declared dead at the scene, while another was freed and airlifted to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol.

Police are warning drivers to steer clear of that stretch of motorway until at least 7.35pm.

The southbound carriageway was closed following the crash, as well as two lanes on the northbound side to allow the air ambulance to land.

The collision investigation unit is carrying out a detailed analysis of the crash scene, but officers hope to reopen the southbound carriageway by 7.35pm.

The northbound side has already opened, but drivers are being warned of huge tailbacks on both sides of the motorway.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call police on 08454 567000.
