A Cheddar business is celebrating having won top prizes in several categories of the British Cheese Awards.

The Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company, in The Cliffs, won three awards, including first prize for its two-year-old vintage cheddar last month.

The small family-owned business is run by John and Katherine Spencer and focuses on quality over quantity. It is also the only cheddar maker in the village.

This year’s competition attracted more than 1,000 entries from 147 makers, with 77 judges reviewing 123 classes of cheese.

There were more than 54 countries entering their produce.

John Spencer said: “We are delighted the hard work and skill of our cheesemakers has been recognised.”

The business was also awarded silver for its mature cheddar and bronze for its cave matured cheddar.

Award chairman Peter Mitchell said it was a ‘great achievement’ for the business and was well deserved.
