Two independent gyms have merged in a bid to fight off a new rival opening at Dolphin Square.

Women’s-only gym Eden Fitness and boxing haven Top Flight have this month merged to form E-Fit Gym group.

Building owner James Morgan, aged 32, told the Mercury he hoped the new concept would create a ‘community hub’ for fitness and health within Weston-super-Mare town centre.

He added: “The gym will be multi-faceted with women’s only area and classes, a mixed gender martial arts section and a body building area.

“Eden members will have their own classes and their own gym floor but will also be able to utilise all of the floors throughout the building.

“We are not certain of the direction of the ground floor, if someone would like to set up a crèche or nursery we would be open to that or if someone was willing to continue the fitness and health aspect with a wellness clinic we would be open to that too.

“Maybe this move will help revitalise North Street in the town centre as some sort of health hub for Weston which has always been my hope.”

Mr Morgan said the move was ‘pre-empting’ the arrival of the new 24-hour Anytime Fitness gym at Dolphin Square and the £2.15m redevelopment of Hutton Moor.

The move came following a refurbishment to the North Street building’s first floor, which will see the staff from Eden move from their ground floor base to the next floor up.

Assistant manager Louise Hayes, aged 23, said: “We have only just been able to finalise the details and sign off on the building work which has made the move slightly last minute.

“However the reason for the move is due to the ground floor needing maintenance.

“This would result in closing for four to eight weeks. We felt the brand new facilities were a better option for everyone.”

The new and improved Gym has started working closely with Weston College to create more educational opportunities for students as well as set up a new campaign called Us Girls to encourage more pupils to be fitter and healthier.

Eden and Top Flight have also put 19 people through level two and three personal training courses over the years and hope to continue to offer job opportunities within Weston’s town centre.
