A Somerset Post Office may still close if a new operator cannot be found in the next month.

Highbridge’s Post Office, in Church Street, was expected to close in October last year after the operator resigned and a deal to sell the building fell through.

The Post Office’s head of external relations and Wells MP James Heappey managed to strike a deal to extend the operator’s notice period by six months – but time is almost up and no-one new has yet stepped forward.

Post Office Ltd is working with the operator to try to find a buyer for the building, but is also approaching other businesses in the town to see if they would operate a post service instead.

Mr Heappey said: “The Post Office provides a vital service within Highbridge and so it
is sad to see the service threatened because the current postmaster does not wish to continue.”

He said Post Offices can go anywhere, including pubs and cafés and hoped someone would be keen to take it on.
