A ‘convenience’ bingo hall is due to open in Weston-super-Mare’s Dolphin Square, it has been revealed this week, after the company applied for a gambling licence.

The multi-million-pound leisure complex in Carlton Street is now only a matter of months away from being opened.

It will be home to a Cineworld cinema, an Anytime Fitness gym, indoor climbing wall and national restaurant chains including Nando’s and Prezzo.

It has now been revealed a bingo hall, run by national company Mecca Bingo, is also due to open.

Mecca Bingo Limited has applied to North Somerset Council for a gambling licence for units three to eight, which are near to Emmanuel Church.

The application says it will be for a Luda Bingo hall, a new type of way to play the game, which is being revealed by Mecca this year.

Mecca says the new halls are a more modern and ‘convenient’ way of playing bingo.

Construction began at Dolphin Square in November 2016, after several years of delays.

Workers are expected to start fitting out the inside of the development in June, with the hope the whole complex could be fully open in August.

The final phase of the project will involve close to 200 luxury flats being built above shops.

The flats phase is being spearheaded by the Government’s Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), which took over the project from developer McLaren Life last year.

Architects will draw up plans for the flats and shops before the HCA and North Somerset Council apply for planning permission.
