A RETIRED police officer who dedicated three decades to the force has now launched a business aimed at preventing isolation among the elderly.

Steve Burroughs, of Bleadon, created Practical Companions to provide affordable transport and care to vulnerable people.

He said: “From the thousands of people of all ages I have met over 30 years of community policing in this area, I am well aware of the isolation which, for various reasons, many older people experience.

“Perhaps they now live alone, family either live away or work full time and are not able to visit as often as they would like to.

“I notice there are various businesses that offer care in the home or will look after pets, but few who address the needs of those who are not necessarily confined to their home.

“So that is where my company can help.”

Mr Burroughs can take customers on day trips, to go shopping or to appointments.

As well as being a travel companion, Mr Burroughs can run errands, help around the house or sit and have a chat.
