As the Mercury went to print, one employee, who wished to remain anonymous, said they were going to ‘rebel’ against the decision.

He said they felt badly treated and wanted to make their voices heard.

Grand Pier human resources manager Andrew Tregenza said the decision would not affect the pier’s opening hours and stressed that there were no redundancies.

He said: “We have 40 full-time staff, which is sufficient to run operations during January, the quietest month of the year. No-one has been laid off.

“Hourly paid staff won’t have any hours in January unless we have a sunny weekend, for example. Many other attractions close for three months over the winter, we don’t.”
