A WOMAN was left seriously injured when the car she was in suddenly careered off the motorway near Clevedon.

The green and gold Mitsubishi Shogun rolled down the embankment of the northbound M5 between junction 21 and 20 at around 2pm yesterday (Sun).

The driver was unhurt but the woman in the front passenger seat suffered serious injuries and is now being treated in Frenchay Hosptial.

Emergency services closed off one lane of the motorway from 2pm-5pm while the collision was investigated.

Police are trying to work out what forced the car to leave the road and are appealing for information from witnesses.

Officers believe a broken down lorry was stationary on the hard shoulder at the time of the incident.
