Car park charges increased

CHARGES are increasing in nine Weston car parks from next spring.
North Somerset Council agreed this week to raise the fees, which come into force from March 2.
Motorists will have to pay more for using Carlton Street, Melrose, Grove Park and Block D Dolphin Square short stay car parks.
Charges are also increasing in Knightstone and Causeway short stay car parks, as well as Locking Road and Hampton long stay car parks.
The council’s executive gave the green light to the rise at its meeting on Tuesday.
Deputy council leader Elfan Ap Rees told members the increase was in line with inflation and the VAT rise.
He said: “We think putting car parking charges up beyond that would really not be the right thing to do in this present austerity period.”
Cllr Ap Rees, when asked about the lack of parking charge enforcement in Weston, said the council was discussing the issue with police.
He added: “They [police] are doing it in Portishead - they are doing it in Weston but not sufficiently to make people aware that it is a deterrent.
“We are discussing with the town centre partnership and traders of how best that can be done.”
