A CRISIS meeting was held this week over the future of one of the West's biggest carnivals.Members of Highbridge and Burnham Carnival Association invited volunteers to the Ritz Social Club in Burnham to help save the popular event from being axed. The carnival, which attracts over 20,000 spectators each November, may be cancelled unless more volunteers are found to help marshall it.Organisers are looking for people to help put out barriers and cones and supervise the famous procession.Association president, Malcolm Borland, said: "There has been a problem because there is just a small number of people doing the work."People have become complacent and take for granted that the event just happens. There is a threat to the carnival but I am continuously optimistic that we can find help."The carnival means a lot to tourism and to the majority of people in town who enjoy it. It brings a lot of trade.
