A police team will move to its new base at a secondary school this spring.

The Cheddar policing team is based at the old station in Cliff Street, but will begin moving to Kings Of Wessex Academy in Station Road later in the month.

The station will not be routinely open to the public but will provide a base for officers who work in the community.

Inspector Andy Pritchard said the switch was a necessary one for the police force.

He said: “The old police station is too large for our needs, but we have been very clear we need to remain in the heart of the community.

“We consulted with officers and partners to find a new location and we feel this option will provide a great base to serve Cheddar and the surrounding areas.”

The school is centrally based in the middle of the village and is only a short distance from the gorge.

A ‘for sale’ sign will be put up at the old police station shortly, with the expectation it will be sold at auction in April.
