A developer wants to build extra apartments on the site of a former Weston-super-Mare hotel which it already has permission to develop.
Developers Aspect360, along with KKM Architects, have submitted an application to build a new five-storey building on the site of the old Bayside Hotel, on the corner of Manilla Crescent and Highbury Road close to Marine Lake.
The former hotel was severely damaged by a fire in June 2011 and the remaining structure was then demolished at the end of 2012. Since then, the site has remained empty.
However, KKM and Aspect360 were given permission by the council in 2015 to build 15 flats on the site in 2015, but they now intend to replace that proposal with a new plan for 27 apartments, along with car parking spaces.
The developers have also said they will respect the area’s heritage in their proposal, as the site lies within the Birnbeck conservation area.
The application’s design and access statement said: “When designing the proposed scheme, particular attention will be paid to strengthening the local character.
“The now-demolished building previously on the site was considered to be harmful to the local character.
“It is therefore intended that the application forms an improvement to the built environment and the wider conservation area.”
