HIGHBRIDGE councillors have sent out an SOS to town residents, urging them to show their support for their under-threat library, or see it disappear.

Hundreds of people have signed a petition urging Somerset County Council to keep the library open, after the announcement that it was one of 20 which are due to lose all funding as Somerset County Council looks to cut £75million.

Although Burnham and Highbridge Town Council may at least cover the building’s £12,000 deficit along with running costs, volunteers will be needed to keep it open.

Town councillor Joe Leach, one of the councillors to have supported the petition, said: “Eric Pickles, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, said the day before the news about the library was announced that libraries should be the last thing to be cut.

“This is a vital service for the people of Highbridge, and I am completely for it staying open if it can do.

“The petition has been well supported, and I haven’t spoken to one person who said they would like to see it close.”
