AN alcoholic has pleaded with magistrates to ban him from pubs and nightclubs in Weston to stop him getting into trouble with the law.

Samuel Glassey, aged 25, issued the appeal at North Somerset Courthouse where he appeared last Thursday charged with assault by beating.

He pleaded guilty to attacking Vickie Winters outside the Tavern Inn the Town pub on September 11.

The court heard that Glassey was on his stag do when he and his cousin Benjamin Fear launched the assault on Ms Winters - Fear’s ex-partner.

Kevin Blackmore, defending, said: “She saw the two defendants drinking and they approached her.

“Mr Glassey kicked her to the abdomen, there was some spitting and then Fear slapped her.”

Ms Winters sustained ‘glancing’ injuries during the assault.

Representing himself in court Glassey, of Dartmouth Close, told magistrates that for the past four years he had a drink and drug problem, but had not touched booze for 11 months before the attack.

He said he had only been drinking in town because it was his stag do and had managed to ‘get to grips’ with his addiction.

Glassey told the court that he had transformed his life and, as well as working in the scaffolding business, he also attended college in London

He added: “I’m going in the right direction.

“I don’t want to drink any more. I need to be banned from every pub and club in Weston and the surrounding area – it is the only way.”

Magistrates adjourned the hearing for a pre-sentence report to be prepared but warned him that he could be sent to prison.

Glassey was released on conditional bail until December 23 when he will be sentenced.

Fear, aged 22 of Dunster Crescent, pleaded guilty to assault by beating in November and was sentenced to a two-month community order with a seven-week curfew and a two-year restraining order.
