The plans for the new visitor building boasting a tea room, toilets and an education area have been well-received by heritage organisations and have been recommended for approval by North Somerset council planning officers.

If allowed to go ahead by members of the unitary authority’s north area planning committee tomorrow, it is hoped the proposals will ensure the future viability of the Grade I-listed Victorian structure.

Eight letters of objection have been written against the proposals and some concerns have been raised about the design of the new addition.

However, organisations including Clevedon Civic Society and English Heritage have all said the efforts to sustain the pier for the future are welcome.

Also due to be considered at tomorrow’s planning meeting is an outline application for the creation of 14 dwellings at the site of Clevedon Cottage Hospital in Old Street.

The proposals, which have also been recommended for approval, have been put together by NHS North Somerset to give the site more commercial viability when it is put on the market following the completion of the town’s new community hospital at Millcross.

Plans for another site in Old Street, Clevedon, will also be discussed by the planning committee. If given the go ahead, they will see a former office building adjacent to the town’s fire station converted into seven dwellings, with a two storey rear extension created.

The proposals for the property, which has lain empty for years, have also been recommended for approval by planning officers.
