The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Weston-super-Mare and North Somerset due to the heavy winds from ex-Ophelia.

Staff at Castle Batch Primary School, in Rawlins Avenue, have made the decision to close it as there are loose tiles at several points round the school.

A spokesman said: “After consultation with North Somerset Health & Safety their advice to us was to close the school at 1pm before the wind speed increased.”

Year one pupils are on a trip at Blaise Castle, in Bristol, and though the trip will continue, they will be back at school by 1pm.

The spokesman added: “We apologies for any inconvenience this may cause, but our priority is the safety of our children and adults in school.”

MORE: Met Office warning with storms set to batter Weston.

Parents and guardians can pick up reception and year one children from the gate at the bottom of the reception playground, year two and three pupils by the resource base, and year fours and sixes by the hall fire exits.

Parents of year five children should wait by the wooden gate as pupils will exit through the fire exit in Mrs Taylor’s classroom.

* We will update this story with further school closures if any are announced.
