The children of a former headteacher visited Westhaven School to donate to its appeal for a new sports hall.

Richard Harris and Liz Cole had read in the Mercury about the Uphill school’s fundraising efforts to build a modern sports hall and changing rooms.

Their father, Hugh Harris, was a teacher at Westhaven from when it first opened through to 1978.

Their mother Mavis, who died in January aged 95, was headteacher at Redhill Primary School, and they said she always had a soft spot for Westhaven.

Richard and Liz went on a tour of the school before deciding to donate £1,000 each towards the sports hall appeal.

PE teacher Tommy Barlow said he was gobsmacked by their donations.

He said: “Thank you so much to both of you from the bottom of our hearts.”
