‘Tears of joy’ marked an ‘excellent’ GCSE results day for Churchill Academy and Sixth Form.
The school is celebrating improved results in GCSE English and maths, with nearly three quarters of pupils (72 per cent) achieved a grade 4 or better which is almost six per cent better than in 2016, while 51 per cent achieved grade 5 or better.
Almost 150 grades were rated at 7 or better, with 20 grade 9s earned by the class of 2017.
Headteacher Chris Hildrew told the Mercury he was ‘very happy’ with the ‘excellent’ results.
He said: “It’s great to see the smiles on the kids’ faces, and lots of tears – but tears of joy.
“I’m really pleased to see a good crop of 7-9s in there. We didn’t know what the numbered grades were going to look like so it’s really pleasing to see they have been rewarded for the efforts they have put in.”
